GEORGE TOWN, PENANG, 11 March 2020 – It has been advised to Penangites that they should stay calm after receiving news of the first positive COVID-19 case being reported in the state.
Dr Asmayani Khalib, State health director, has also reminded the public to always practise good hygiene and the common precaution health guidelines such as washing their hands with water and soap for at least 20 seconds and to use hand sanitisers frequently.
“If you experience symptoms like fever, cough or breathing difficulties, you must quickly go to the nearest clinic or hospital to get treatment… The public must also try to avoid visiting crowded places.”

A spokesman for Motorola in Bayan Lepas yesterday confirmed that one of its engineers tested positive for coronavirus.
“We are working closely with the Health Ministry and are following their guidance to minimise the risk of further exposure… As a safety precaution, our employees and associates will work from home for the next two weeks.”

It is understood that the man was in contact with a COVID-19 patient in Kuala Lumpur recently.
Several primary schools and kindergartens have also issued notices advising parents working in the company not to send their children to schools.
Meanwhile, factory workers in the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone have restricted their outdoor movements.
As of yesterday, the Health Ministry has confirmed 129 positive COVID-19 cases and 262 cases still waiting for lab results confirmation in the country.
In a previous statement, Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that all the new reported cases were detected during contact tracking activities and they were admitted to the hospital for isolation and further treatment.
Close contact tracking activity is being conducted until the cause of this infection can be identified, he said.
