The F&N Chairman’s Award is presented to the children of employees who achieve outstanding results academically and in extra-curricular activities, in recognition of the hard work and commitment that they had put in.
For 2021, F&NHB awarded 67 students for their excellent results in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), tertiary education, and one Special Award. Each young achiever received cash awards of between RM400 and RM5,000.
In total, RM196,000 in cash awards were given out in this 19th edition of the F&N Chairman’s Award.
The Chairman’s Award was granted to two recipients in the IGCSE category with 29 in the SPM category. 35 students in the tertiary education category were awarded for successfully gaining admission to a local or overseas university.
One student even received a Special Award for winning a bronze medal in an international Math competition.
“There are many challenges and opportunities in today’s fast-changing world. Students today need to be encouraged to develop their potential to their fullest. As students explore their talents and test their limits while still in a safe learning environment, it is essential to recognise their accomplishments. At F&N, we encourage them to unlock their full potential to be better prepared for tomorrow’s real-world challenges,” said F&NHB Chairman Y.A.M. Tengku Syed Badarudin Jamalullail.
“I hope that this recognition will motivate the students to strive for greater success and be the best that they can be. At the same time, I hope that we will also remember our responsibility to share the blessings we have been granted, whether in talent or in kind, with others in society and play our part to contribute to the socio-economic development of our nation,” he added.
Jared Ong Kai Ze were among the recipients of the 2021 Chairman’s Award. The SMJK Katholik Petaling Jaya student scored straight As for SPM.
When asked, Jared said “I am very honoured and grateful to receive this award from F&N. It makes me feel that my hard work is recognised and appreciated.”
His proud father, Bryan Ong See Hang, said, “As a parent, I feel very happy for my son to be able to achieve the goal he set for his SPM exam. There was a period of anxiety due to the COVID-19 lockdown and it disrupted school sessions. We weren’t certain he could score As for all his subjects until we got the results.”
Chua Shang Yeet received two awards for excelling in SPM and also winning a bronze medal in an international Math competition.
“It is an honour to be one of the recipients. I am very happy and would like to thank my beloved parents, teachers, classmates and friends for their support. They were always encouraging and motivating me,” Chua said.
Chua’s mother, Saw Hui Shing has worked with F&N for 22 years and is truly grateful that her son is determined in pursuing his own interests. Saw said that she was very proud of his achievements and looks forward to her son’s future success. She is confident that he will assume greater responsibilities and achieve greater heights.
Mohd A Yazid Bin Yahya has two children who received the Chairman’s Award. Both his eldest and youngest daughter, Balqis and Nabilah Binti Mohd A Yazid, each received RM5,000 and RM800 respectively for their scholarly achievements.
“I am so proud of my daughters. As a parent, it is very rewarding to see that my daughters are working hard to pursue their dreams and being recognised for it. I also appreciate that they are both such team players – they encourage and motivate each other so well. Their achievements have reminded me that I must be doing something right,” said Mohd A Yazid.
Echoing her father, Balqis said, “I am very grateful and excited. I believe this award will boost my spirits to achieve more. My biggest motivation to succeed is the joy I feel when I learn new things. I feel like I can widen my horizons to become a better person.”
Another recipient was Praveena Vanavelu. She said “Receiving this award gives me even more motivation to continue excelling in my studies. I want to continue to do my best and make my parents proud.”
R Saravanavelu who has worked in F&N for 17 years proudly said, “I am the proudest dad today, not only because Praveena is a top scorer but more so seeing how my daughter has grown up to be a responsible young lady with determination in her life. I have always encouraged her to dream big. I feel truly blessed that my daughter is such a go-getter.”
F&NHB Chief Executive Officer, Lim Yew Hoe praised the F&N Chairman’s Award recipients for their exemplary achievements in academic and extra-curricular activities
He also recognised the recipients’ resilience and drive to achieve their goals in the face of the many disruptions and hardships brought about by the pandemic.
“I would like to congratulate all the Chairman’s Award recipients for their efforts and perseverance in achieving their success. This truly is a testament of these young people’s mental resilience and strong willpower to succeed. This will surely be the foundation for more success later in life. I also commend their parents who have also worked hard and instilled strong values to bring out the best in their children.
“As a parent myself, I understand that it is not easy to juggle a thriving career and family life, especially if we are committed to ensuring that our children receive the best opportunities to thrive and fulfill their potential,” Lim added.
The F&N Chairman’s Award was inaugurated in 2003 to motivate the children of employees to become well-rounded students who are not only focused on education but also their personal interests. To date, F&NHB has disbursed cash rewards amounting to RM4 million to over 2,000 children throughout the country and is looking forward to continue recognising more deserving students in the future.
