KUALA LUMPUR – Microsoft is collaborating with the Malaysian government on a newly announced MyDIGITAL GovTech Innovation partnership.
The US-based tech company released a statement about the announcement recently following the signing of a Letter of Intent (LOI) between Microsoft and MyDIGITAL Corporation when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob visited the US in May of this year.
The statement said that the collaboration is a commitment to innovation, digital skills and building Malaysia’s economic resilience.
According to Microsoft, the LOI outlined areas of collaboration which includes developing cybersecurity capabilities, driving the adoption of digital technologies within the public sector, and cultivating skilled talent to expand the digital economy.
The partnership will be building on the continued efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s economic resilience where Microsoft and other key governmental agencies like MyDIGITAL Corporation and the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU), aims to equip civil servants with the digital skills and training needed for them to bolster the country’s aspirations for inclusive, responsible and sustainable development.
The initiative was announced on June 1 by Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy), on behalf of the government.
Mustapa stated that the role of Malaysia’s civil servants is crucial to improve the country’s economic resilience during these difficult times.
“Our long-standing cooperation with Microsoft allows the civil service to be more innovative, data-driven, and people-centred when searching for effective solutions and policies. A collaboration like this is an important step for Malaysia to equip the countrymen with the necessary tools and capabilities to develop a digital-first economy,” he elaborated.
Apart from that, he revealed that the partnership with Microsoft will include training 300,000 people with the Human Resource Development Corporation by the year 2024.
Mustapha stated that this initiative is the next milestone of the government’s partnership with Microsoft as Malaysia progresses towards realising the goals outlined in the 12th Malaysia Plan and the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint.
The outlined goals included 80% adoption of cloud storage across government agencies this year, 100% digital literacy among civil servants, and 80% end-to-end online government services by 2025, he explained.
Meanwhile, Microsoft stated that the announcement of MyDIGITAL GovTech is in addition to the Cloud Framework Agreement that was inked between the US tech company and MAMPU in order to develop a trusted cloud network and empower the digital transformation journey of Malaysia’s public sector.
Jean-Philippe Courtois, executive vice president and president of national transformation partnerships at Microsoft, stated that the company’s aim is to enable every individual and organisation on the earth to accomplish more.
“Everyone must profit. Certainly, this is shown in our dedication to Malaysia. This year marks Microsoft’s 30th anniversary in Malaysia, and we are pleased to celebrate the milestone with our partners from Malaysia’s government.
“Microsoft intends to stay steadfast in our partnership to allow for Malaysia to leverage our expertise and skills in technology to fuel inclusive economic growth and resilience in the digital age,” Courtois continued.
