KUALA LUMPUR – Petronas is in talks with various Japanese firms to come up with solutions for sustainable technology within Malaysia.
Malaysia’s Senior Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, stated that Petronas or Petroliam Nasional Bhd, is in talks with Japanese firms in an effort for Malaysia to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Speaking to reporters during the International Trade and Industry Ministry’s (MITI) 2022 Aidilfitri get-together event, he said that both countries are collaborating on a study in order to reach sustainability goals.
Quoted by Bernama, he said that “We will continue (with this effort) and we have also asked the Japanese to continue the collaboration.”
Additionally, the minister opined that MITI’s efforts to make Malaysia an attractive investment destination is paying off, the results of which are more high-quality job opportunities and bringing in technologies that would allow for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to enhance their productivity levels.
Furthermore, the ‘Look East Policy’, has strengthened Malaysia’s socio-economic position since its introduction by Tun Dr Mahatir Mohamad in 1982, 40 years ago.
Despite that, Azmin stated that today’s challenges have since shifted.
“Our current focus, at the core of the 12th Malaysia Plan, is on environmental, sustainability and issues related to green technology,” he explained.
In recent news, Malaysia and Japan have agreed to further improve bilateral relations to a more comprehensive level, adding on to the ‘Look East Policy’. This includes adding other new areas of cooperation to encompass energy, smart cities, the environment, and climate change issues.
Malaysia were among the 192 world leaders that agreed to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, introduced by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015.
Since then, the government and government-linked companies have been ramping up the efforts in order to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
