PENANG – TF-AMD Microelectronics Sdn. Bhd. will be expanding its Penang manufacturing facility with the company’s capital investment on this project expected to be worth RM2 billion.
A recent statement by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) revealed that the new facility will be located at the state’s Batu Kawan Industrial Park and expected to create over 3,000 employment opportunities requiring skills in advanced semiconductor engineering, design, and process technologies for high-performance computing solutions.
Managing Director and Corporate Vice President of TF-AMD, Neoh Soon Ee, stated that the new facility will be charged with manufacturing advanced integrated circuit technology with the building set to be 1.5 million square feet, built on a land size that’s approximately 14-acres.
He added that after the new facility is completed in 2023, TF-AMD’s total manufacturing capacity will be over 2.3 million square feet.
The strategic expansion builds on the significant investments TF- AMD has made in Malaysia over the past 50 years that will support the company’s continued growth, the statement further stated.
The announcement of the new facility was made at a celebratory event at TF-AMD’s Bayan Lepas facility in Penang. Among the special guests was Penang Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow.
The chief minister said that TF-AMD’s presence in the state for over 50 years has greatly proven the conduciveness of Penang’s business environment, bolstered by resilient supply chains, excellent infrastructure and future-proof talent pool.
“With TF- AMD’s wealth of knowledge and experience in the electrical and electronics (E&E) industry, I’m confident that this strategic expansion plan will provide immense opportunities for local talent development in high-performance computing solutions,” Chow said.
Meanwhile, Shi Ming Da, Chairman of TF-AMD, stated that the company’s confidence in Malaysia is brought on due to the country’s outstanding geographic location, good business environment, diligent and sincere workforce.
MIDA’s statement also revealed that TF-AMD has been instrumental to the expansion of the local semiconductor ecosystem as it is one of the key eight investors which catalysed Penang to become known as the ‘Silicon Valley of the East in Malaysia’.
Over the past 50 years, the company has worked on various growth opportunities within the country, investing in different parts of the semiconductor value chain.
TF-AMD also intends to ramp up their efforts to hire 3,000 workers with a STEM background while at the same time develop local vendors in the areas of Industry 4.0, automation and engineering services in the coming five years.
