KUALA LUMPUR – Employment for digital-related positions in Malaysia saw a surge by 300% last year compared to the amount in 2020, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad.

During the launching of AirAsia Academy’s ‘On-Demand Learning’ (ODL) portal recently, she said that 20% of the positions will be filled by new graduates.

According to her, the figure was the outcome of a study conducted by the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), involving over 56,000 job openings in the digital fields.

She said that there is a growing need for individuals who are proficient in digital skills and it is essential for contributing to the growth of Malaysia’s industries as well as the country’s economy.

Based on the ‘Future of Jobs Report 2020’ report, it is stated that employment opportunities in the global digital field will increase by 12% to 97 million jobs by the year 2025, she explained.

Noraini continued by saying that the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) had always carried out strategic measures while making various efforts to ensure that Malaysian graduates were capable of meeting the needs of the industries within the digital field.

During the event, Noraini also handed over job placements to the participants of the University Graduate Digital Transformation Programme,

Also at the same event, the Capital A Bhd president (ventures), Aireen Omar, stated that AirAsia Academy had played an essential role in helping to bridge the digital barriers between the higher education institutions and players of the digital industries.

Omar, who is also the AirAsia Academy CEO, further stated that they have partnered with different firms in the industry including government bodies in order to ‘upskill’ and ‘reskill’ nearly 6,000 students as well as those who have worked with the essential skills to catalyse the Industrial Revolution 4.0.

The event saw a total of six graduates from University Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) who had successfully completed their digital courses at AirAsia Academy being presented with job offers from a variety of well-known firms including AirAsia, BASF, and Carsome.
