KUALA LUMPUR – The pandemic has accelerated the adoption of digital solutions and it was clear over the past two years that utilising the online space is just as important for entrepreneurs to stay relevant and connect to their customers.
This year, the 21 teams participating in the University Entrepreneurship Challenge (UNIEC) 2022 will have to prove that they are able to adapt to the digital space as part of their competition requirement from August 4 to 6, starting 10am to 6pm.
The Digital E-Fair component is part of the six competitions in UNIEC 2022 where the 130 students will showcase their products in a digital space hosted on the website here: smeefair.com.my/uniec-2022
“We know that digitalisation is an important part of entrepreneurship. The pandemic has shown us that the world is able to adapt in the digital space for example having events, webinars, and conferences online,” said UNIEC 2022 Organising Chairlady, Ms Amy Seok.
“We want the participants to experience hosting and selling their products through the Digital E-Fair where they can promote their items or services to booth visitors and even interact with them via live Zoom meetings,” she added.
The 17 universities will each host a booth and customers will be able to support their businesses by purchasing their products, donating to the teams, or even sponsoring their favourite teams through crowdfunding.
“As a startup, funding for their business is crucial to pave the way for these young entrepreneurs to succeed. That is why the UNIEC 2022 is always trying to find ways to help incubate these startups. It is in line with the theme of ‘Navigating and Unleashing the Potentials of Young, Aspiring Entrepreneurs’ that we chose,” Seok said.
Meanwhile, guest of honour, Adj. Prof. Ts. Maxshangkar, founder and group CEO of Max Capital Management Holdings Ltd Group, said that entrepreneurship is important to shift and contribute to the country’s economic developments.
Additionally, he said the journey of being an entrepreneur is about reflecting on what is learnt throughout the journey and with the Digital E-Fair platform, the UNIEC 2022 participants can use it to bring up two important skills which are leadership and presentation skills.
“As an entrepreneur, we need to know how to lead our organisation and shape our presentation skills as customers won’t buy our products and services based on pricing alone, but because of the value given,” he explained.
Special guest Prof. Dr Hjh Raja Suzana Bte Raja Kasim, Professor of Entrepreneurship and Management at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan and one of the business coaches for UNIEC 2022, said that the competition thus far has been interesting and it shows the organisers’ efforts to enable the participants to build and boost their branding strategies.
“This Digital E-Fair is to make sure the participants are getting greater visibility in the market and a great opportunity for the teams to raise funds. The crowdfunding is an incredible move in the entrepreneurship journey,” she said.
As the Digital E-Fair is a part of the competition leg of the UNIEC 2022, there will be three judges that will be marking each team for their performance over the three days. The judges are Marcus Teoh, Founder of Marcus Teoh Global; Christine Tham, Founder of GELATOMANIA SDN. BHD.; and Wong Cheehow, Marketing Director of AP Entertainment PLT.
