KUALA LUMPUR – PhillipCapital Group successfully concluded its first hybrid Phillip Investment Conference 2022, on July 30, at the Berjaya Times Square Hotel, in the presence of over 2,800 delegates both physically and virtually.
The highly anticipated annual conference featured more than 10 distinguished speakers who shared their insights and up-to-date information on topics ranging from the global economy to investment strategies and investors sentiments.
Fund managers and industry experts from Bursa Malaysia Derivatives, Eastspring Investments Berhad, Kenanga Investors Berhad, and other unit trust management companies shared their perspective on key market developments, challenges faced in, as well as the outlook for the rest of 2022.
CEO of Bursa Malaysia Berhad Datuk Muhammad Umar Swift, announced the launching of the revamped Gold Futures Contract (FGLD) by Bursa Malaysia Derivatives set for later this year during the conference. The revamped FGLD is intended to provide domestic investors an opportunity to trade gold in US Dollars, without the need for conversion to Malaysian Ringgit.
“Additionally, the exchange is also exploring other vegetable oils [portfolios] to provide [a more] diverse trading strategy proposition to the community, such as inter-commodity spread trading,” he added during his keynote speech.
Also at the conference, PhillipCapital Malaysia Group’s Managing Director, Andy Lim, announced the completion of the sales deal resulting in Alliance Investment Bank Berhad’s (“AIBB”) stockbroking business being acquired by Phillip Capital Sdn Bhd (“Phillip Capital”, formerly known as Phillip Futures Sdn Bhd). This will enable investors to access a wider range of products and services offered by Phillip Capital. Apart from CFD and Futures, customers can now trade stocks with Phillip Capital.
“As we complete the transfer of the securities business to Phillip Capital, the combined experience of the remisiers and management team of AIBB’s stockbroking business with Phillip Capital’s derivatives team and together with our global market access, we believe we will be able to introduce more innovative broking services and provide an exceptional investing experience to our clients,” said Lim.

The conference was followed by a panellist discussion titled “Investment Strategies in a V.U.C.A. World” featuring four industry specialists – Doreen Choo, Head of Investments, Eastspring Investments Berhad; Christopher Kok Keng Fai, Head of Equities Investment, Kenanga Investors Berhad; Mohd Saleem Kader Bakas, Executive Vice President, Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Berhad; and Ang Kok Heng, Chief Investment Officer, Phillip Capital Management Sdn Bhd. The panellist discussion was moderated by Sim Wie Boon, Producer from BFM 89.9.
The panellists shared their latest insights, ideas, outlooks and strategies on investing and adapting to the V.U.C.A. (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) environment.
Choo said that she expects the supply chain pressure to ease in the second half of this year along with the expectation of a slower pace of interest rate hike. However, depending on the pace of increase in prices of goods, central banks need to balance between combating inflation and avoid triggering a recession.
The conference was proud to have Bursa Malaysia as the Exchange Partner, and Eastspring Investments Berhad and Kenanga Investors Berhad as Platinum Sponsors. Gold Sponsors were Affin Hwang Asset Management, AmFunds Management Berhad, Maybank Asset Management Group Berhad, MIDF Amanah Asset Management Berhad, Nomura Asset Management Malaysia, Pheim Asset Management Sdn Bhd, Principal Asset Management Berhad, RHB Asset Management Sdn Bhd and UOB Asset Management (Malaysia) Berhad. Silver sponsor was The Archipelago Group.
In 2019, there were 2,300 delegates who attended the physical investment conference. The following year, in 2020, the PhillipCapital Group had decided not to hold the conference for the first time in years due to pandemic concerns. However, in 2021, the group decided to resume and hosted its very first virtual investment conference. This year, the group organised its very first hybrid investment conference, the recently concluded 12th Phillip Investment Conference.
