Global Experts Unite to Transform the Plastics Industry Towards Sustainability and Net-Zero Emissions
HONG KONG, Aug. 27, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Sponsored by the Hong Kong Plastics Manufacturers Association (HKPMA) and organized by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC), the “International Conference on Greening Our Future: Reshaping the Plastics Industry for Business Sustainability” under General Support Programme of Innovation and Technology Fund, will take place on Tuesday, 9 September. The event aims to drive the green transformation of the plastics industry by bringing together international experts from the plastics sector and other fields to explore innovative technologies and circular economy models for sustainable development in the plastics industry.
Focus on the Green Transformation of the Plastics Industry
With growing global attention on environmental issues related to plastics, the industry must adapt to stringent regulations and meet diverse customer demands. This conference will focus on three key themes: “Plastics Recycling”, “Net-Zero Life Cycle Emissions” and “Plastics Safety and Sustainability”. It will explore opportunities and challenges in the plastics sector and propose forward-looking solutions to support industry transformation.
Mr. Andrew Hui Man-wai, Chairman of the Hong Kong Plastics Manufacturers Association stated, “The plastics industry is at a critical stage of transformation. I believe this Conference will provide a professional platform for combining innovative technologies with global best practices, driving the industry towards net-zero emissions and a circular economy. We hope that Hong Kong, with its international advantages and professional expertise, can become a key engine in advancing the green transformation of the global plastics industry.”
Diverse Distinguished Speakers and Keynote Highlights
The conference will feature prominent speakers from the plastics industry and related fields, including Mr. Yonghai DU, Chief Innovation Officer of the HKPC; internationally renowned materials science expert, Dr. Chris DeArmitt; global and local circular economy advocate, Mr. Frank Schepers; and Professor Elvis Au, BBS, Adjunct Professor of the University of Hong Kong and former Deputy Director of the Environmental Protection Department of the HKSAR Government. These experts will share their research findings and practical experiences in plastics sustainability, providing insights into the industry’s transformation from various perspectives.
Highlight Session: Understanding Plastics Through Science
Dr. Chris DeArmitt will present a scientific perspective on plastics, sharing insights from his book named “The Plastics Paradox” to address public concerns about environmental issues such as microplastics. Additionally, Professor Elvis Au BBS will introduce Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as an internationally standardized methodology adopted by the European Union (EU) to comprehensively evaluate the environmental impact of products from raw material extraction to disposal. He will also explain how European standards assess plastics based on this approach.
Future Prospects for Technological Innovation and Circular Economy
The Conference will also showcase various technological innovations that provide practical solutions for plastics recycling and green transformation, including:
- Integrated Waste Processing Technology: Enhancing the efficiency of plastic wastetreatment
- Carbon (CO2) Capture and Conversion Technologies: Advancing low-carbon productionmodels
- Closed-Loop Circular Economy in Bottle-to-Bottle Model
- PLA Injection Molding and Low Carbon Footprint Material Recycling Technology:Promoting the application and commercialization of bioplastics
